Whether you are a new canal boat owner, or you’ve owned a vessel for some time, there are so many options for exploring British waterways. We share the ultimate UK canal route planner and additional tips to help you make the most of your boating experience.

Canal Route Planner for New Boat Owners

There are some popular and scenic canal routes in the UK, but different waterways require varying levels of skill and experience. So, what are the best canal routes for beginners? If you are a new boat owner, you need to focus on easy navigation.

We would advise choosing a route with fewer locks, for example, the Bath to Devizes canal section starting at Foxhanger Wharf. Another great canal route for a beginner is the lock-free Lancaster Canal that heads towards the Lake District.

Although many people opt for ring routes so you can retrace your journey, this can be too much pressure for a first-timer. The Four Counties Ring, for example, covers the Trent and Mersey canals, as well as Staffordshire and Worcestershire, and the Shropshire Union. But this route requires 8 hours of travel per day if you plan to do this within a week.

Our canal boat communities are very supportive, and you’ll usually find helpful advice wherever you have moored. At most marinas, you should have access to boat services too.

Benefits of Owning a Canal Boat

There are so many benefits to owning a canal boat. This includes flexibility and the freedom to explore the UK’s waterways at your own pace. Canal boats are becoming an increasingly popular choice for those wishing to live a water-based lifestyle. In many towns and cities, there are clear cost benefits when compared to long-term property rentals.

Essential Canal Route Planner Tips for Boat Owners

Unlike cars on our roads, canal boats travel on the right side of the waterway. There is a 4mph speed limit on our canals and rivers. Lower your speed when you are approaching a bend, junction, lock or bridge, as well as when you pass another canal boat or an angler. Although you don’t need a licence to steer a canal boat, it’s worth getting some tuition before you embark on a long journey.

Always remember to close the gates behind you after you have used a lock. Also, try to share a lock with other boats, as this helps to share the lock operating load and save water.
When you head into a tunnel, switch on your headlight and check to see if there are other boats inside.

Why Buy a Canal Boat from Us?

At Collingwood Boat Builders, we have a variety of boats ready for delivery. Our range includes 45ft x 6ft 10in and 60ft x 12ft 6in Cruiser Sailaways, as well as the 70ft x 12ft 3in Euro Cruiser.

So you’ve purchased a Sailaway canal boat with the intention of fitting out the interior yourself. Whether you’re the proud owner of a brand new narrowboat or whether you have a little extra space to play with in a wide-beam houseboat, canal boat interior design poses unique challenges, but thankfully you can overcome this with a touch of creativity resulting in a functional and aesthetically pleasing interior.

Understanding the Space You’re Working With

Unlike traditional home design, canal boat interiors must take into account limited space, irregular layouts, and the need for practicality in every aspect. Maximising storage solutions, optimising spatial flow, and incorporating multi-functional furniture are just a few considerations that can allow you to make the most of the space available.

It is important to have an idea of the kind of lifestyle you wish to have when on your canal boat. Are you looking for a leisure retreat to cruise the waterways o are you looking to transform your boat into a floating home?

Consider the Layout – Canal Boat Interior Design

This will tie in heavily with the function that you want the vessel to serve. Are you an entertainer and pan to have guests, or are you looking for a more peaceful retreat away from the stresses of everyday life?

These questions can determine where you decide to place certain rooms within the layout of the boat. For example, if your ideal lifestyle is one of quiet relaxation consider designing the bedroom at the bow of the vessel as, providing the bow deck is long enough, it will give you your very own private deck from which to take in the serenity of life on the canals.

Toilet facilities are also a key thinking point in terms of placement. Do you want to have to walk the length of the vessel to use the toilet, or do you value convenience and want to place it towards the rear of the craft? In the case of convenience, this usually comes with a trade-off with space.

Utilise Smart Storage Spaces

Whether designing a livaboard or a waterway cruiser storage options are important but more so if you plan to live aboard. There’s nothing worse than decking out your boat immaculately and then finding that you haven’t accounted for the amount of items that you wish to bring aboard.

Consider using vertical space for space-saving storage options. This allows you to free up the main living areas and makes moving around the vessel easier without feeling cluttered.

Create a Sense of Space with Light Colours and Decor

Depending on how you want the feel of the interior to come across, bright colours can really help emphasise the space you have available and even make the interior seem bigger.

Traditionally canal boats utilised a lot of natural colours such as wood tones like oak, mixed with cream or white, but recently a lot of liveaboards have utilised grey tones to create a very contemporary finish.

Narrowboat owners should take care not to overpower their space with vibrant colours as this can be a tad distracting and even lead to a decreased feeling of space within the vessel.

Whether you’re a regular canal journeyman or you’re experiencing cruising the UK waterways for the first time, when embarking on a canal boat cruise, it is important to pack the right essentials to ensure a memorable and comfortable experience. Whether you’re cruising through scenic waterways or exploring charming towns along the canals, having the right gear will make all the difference.

Clothing essentials on the canals

Firstly, a waterproof jacket is an absolute must-have when cruising on a canal boat. The weather can be unpredictable, and sudden rain showers are not uncommon. Investing in a high-quality waterproof jacket will keep you dry and protected from the elements. Look for jackets that are lightweight, breathable, and have sealed seams to prevent any water from seeping in.

Secondly, packing layers for warmth is essential as temperatures can vary throughout the day. Even during summer months, evenings on the water can get chilly. Opt for lightweight sweaters or fleece jackets that can be easily layered over t-shirts or long-sleeve tops. This way, you can adjust your clothing according to the changing weather conditions and stay comfortable throughout your cruise.

Lastly, don’t forget to pack a sun hat to protect yourself from harmful UV rays while enjoying your time outdoors on the canal boat. Choose hats with wide brims that provide ample shade for your face and neck. Additionally, consider hats made of breathable materials like straw or cotton to keep you cool under the sun.

Ensure to include the following safety items on your canal boat journey

Life jackets are crucial for ensuring the safety of everyone on board. In case of an emergency or accident, life jackets provide buoyancy and help keep individuals afloat until rescue arrives. It is essential to have enough life jackets for each person on the boat and ensure they are easily accessible.

A well-stocked first aid kit is another essential item to have on board. Accidents can happen at any time, even during a leisurely canal boat cruise. The first aid kit should contain basic supplies such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, medical adhesive tape, pain relievers, and any necessary medication for individuals on board.

Additionally, packing a torch is highly recommended. Canal boat cruises often involve navigating through dark tunnels or mooring in dimly lit areas. A torch will come in handy when moving around the boat during nighttime or when exploring nearby surroundings.

Make sure you have suitable utensils for food and drink

Having the appropriate dishware is crucial for enjoying meals onboard. Opt for lightweight and durable options such as melamine or enamel plates, bowls, and cups. These materials are not only resistant to breakage but also easy to clean.

Pack a set of stainless steel cutlery including forks, knives, and spoons. Additionally, consider including a can opener, bottle opener, and corkscrew for convenience when preparing meals or opening beverages.

To keep your food fresh during the journey, invest in high-quality food storage containers. Look for leak-proof containers that can withstand transportation on a boat. Opt for stackable options to save space in your limited galley kitchen area.

Remember to pack enough dishware, utensils, and food storage containers based on the number of people onboard and the duration of your canal boat cruise.

Pack enough toiletries for your trip!

Key items that should not be overlooked are towels and toiletries, with an emphasis on using biodegradable options whenever possible. Additionally, packing an ample supply of toilet paper is essential for maintaining hygiene while on board.

Towels are indispensable during a canal boat cruise as they serve multiple purposes. They can be used for drying off after a refreshing swim in the canal or for wiping away any spills or messes that may occur during your journey. It’s advisable to pack lightweight and quick-drying towels to save space and ensure they dry quickly between uses.

When it comes to toiletries, it’s always best to opt for biodegradable options. This helps minimize the impact on the environment as you navigate through different waterways. Look for biodegradable soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and other personal care products that are safe for both you and the surrounding ecosystem.

Lastly, don’t forget to pack an ample supply of toilet paper, if in doubt pack more as you don’t want to be caught short! It ensures you won’t run out during your trip and provides peace of mind knowing you have this basic necessity readily available.

Canal maps and guides help you make the most of your canal boat journey

Canal maps or guides serve as indispensable tools for navigating through the intricate network of canals. They provide crucial information about lock locations, which are essential for safely manoeuvring through different water levels, they’ll also provide you information about which waterways are suitable for the type of boat you’re using as wide beam boats are limited in certain canals.

These maps also highlight mooring spots along the canals, allowing boaters to plan their stops and overnight stays accordingly. As well as this, it allows them to explore hidden gems along the canals, and make the most of their cruising experience.

Make sure you bring your own entertainment!

While you may be surrounded by beautiful scenery and have plenty of time for relaxation, it’s always a good idea to bring along some entertainment options to keep yourself occupied during downtime.

One essential item to consider packing is books. Whether you prefer novels, non-fiction, or travel guides, having a selection of books on hand can provide hours of entertainment as you leisurely cruise along the canals. You can immerse yourself in captivating stories or learn more about the history and culture of the areas you are passing through.

Another great option for entertainment on a canal boat cruise is board games or playing cards. These classic games are perfect for socializing with your travel companions and can help create lasting memories during your journey. Whether it’s a competitive game of Monopoly or a casual round of poker, board games and playing cards offer endless possibilities for fun and friendly competition.

Remember to choose compact versions of the above games that won’t take up too much space in your luggage. Additionally, consider bringing waterproof options or protective covers for any items that may be exposed to water during your canal boat adventure.

Additional items that are always useful to remember

A quickfire guide to some items that you should include but are sometimes overlooked!

Extra ropes and bungee cords: These versatile tools can come in handy for securing your boat during docking or tying down any loose items on board.

Portable phone charger: To stay connected throughout your journey, bring a portable phone charger. This will ensure that you have a reliable power source for your devices, especially if you plan to use navigation apps or capture beautiful moments along the way.

Binoculars: Canal boat cruises offer picturesque views of nature, wildlife, and charming villages along the waterway. Bringing binoculars will enhance your experience by allowing you to observe distant landscapes and spot interesting bird species.

Insect repellent: As you navigate through different regions, it’s important to protect yourself from pesky mosquitoes and other insects. Pack an effective insect repellent to ward off unwanted bites and make your time on deck more enjoyable.

Sunscreen: Spending extended periods outdoors exposes you to the sun’s rays, even when surrounded by water. Apply sunscreen generously before setting off and reapply as needed throughout the day to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation.

Cash for mooring fees or dining out along the way: It’s always wise to carry some cash as a backup in case of technical issues or unexpected circumstances. Additionally, having cash on hand allows you the flexibility of dining out at local restaurants or purchasing goods from small vendors you may encounter during your trip.

Canal boat cruises offer a unique and relaxing way to explore the waterways. To ensure you make the most of your experience, here are some helpful tips for enjoying your canal boat cruise to the fullest:

1. Plan ahead

Research the canal routes and destinations that interest you. Consider factors such as duration, scenery, and attractions along the way. This will help you create an itinerary that suits your preferences.

2. Make sure the route accommodates your boat

Certain parts of the inland waterways are restrictive for owners of wide-beam vessels. To avoid any mishaps or worse damage to your vessel, make sure the canal stretch you intend to cruise on is suitable.

3. Learn basic navigation skills

Familiarise yourself with basic navigation techniques before embarking on your cruise. Understand how to steer the boat, operate locks, and read canal maps or guides.

4. Pack wisely

Pack essentials such as comfortable clothing, sunscreen, hats, insect repellent, toiletries, and any necessary medications. Remember to bring entertainment options like books or board games for downtime on board.

5. Embrace slow travel

Canal boat cruises are all about slowing down and enjoying a leisurely pace of travel. Take time to appreciate the scenic beauty around you and embrace a relaxed mindset throughout your journey.

6. Explore local attractions

Make stops to explore charming towns, villages, or historical sites near the canals. Take advantage of opportunities for cycling or walking excursions along towpaths.

7. Enjoy local cuisine

Sample regional dishes at waterside pubs or restaurants along your route. Indulge in traditional meals or try out local specialities for an authentic culinary experience.

8. Connect with nature

Canal boat cruises offer a chance to immerse yourself in nature’s tranquillity. Keep an eye out for wildlife sightings like ducks, swans, herons, or even otters while cruising through peaceful waterways.

9. Engage with fellow boaters

Canal communities are known for their friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Strike up conversations with other boaters, exchange tips and recommendations, and learn from their experiences.

10. Relax and unwind

Above all, remember to relax and enjoy the journey. Embrace the slower pace of life on the water, take in the beautiful surroundings, and create lasting memories with your loved ones.

By following these tips, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable canal boat cruise experience that allows you to fully appreciate the beauty of your chosen waterway destination.

Are you looking for the best spots to cruise in the UK this spring? Whether you live aboard your canal boat or it is solely for recreation, spring is an ideal time to explore the UK’s waterways as it’s when nature starts to come alive again and the weather is just right for cruising. However, what happens if you’re a wide-beam canal boat owner?

Wide beam boats offer more livable spaces, which is why they make such great residential options, however, their wider beam, means that they quite literally won’t fit in the slimmer channels of canals built to accommodate their narrowboat brethren.

So the question remains, where can a wide-beam boat owner take a cruising trip? Well never fear in this article, we’ll discuss some of the top spots in the UK for wide beam canal boat cruising in spring 2023.

The Grand Union Canal

Originally known as the Grand Junction Canal, The Grand Union Canal formed the link between Birmingham and London back in their industrial heyday. Whilst initially intended for narrowboats it underwent work in the 1930s where it was enlargened and deepened with the intention of allowing access for wide beam vessels. Whilst the work was never fully completed (limiting total access for wide beam boats) there are still large sections of the southern stretch of the canal that are accessible to wide beam canal boats.

Part of the charm of the Grand Union is that it still retains much of its industrial heritage, from the canal side workshops to the pumping stations that stretch along its length.

There are a few drawbacks for some wide-beam owners, as water depth can be a bit of an issue, along with suitable mooring spots the closer you get to London.

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal was built to link the two cities and no other canal in the UK links two cities that are further apart. Dating back 200 years, this scenic stretch of waterway boasts some of the best walking and nature-watching spots (over 127 miles of them).

Cutting through Lancashire and on through the Pennines, the canal touches the edge of one of the UK’s most loved beauty spots, the West Yorkshire Dales, before reaching Leeds.

Looking for a Wide Beam Canal Boat to Start Your Adventures?

Collingwood is the UK’s largest canal boat builder and offers a range of wide-beam vessels with a host of features. Browse our boats or start your own build for a fully customisable liveaboard vessel.

Narrowboat or Barge – what is it? This is a question that a lot of boating enthusiasts get frustrated about as

It’s all too often that a narrowboat is incorrectly referred to as a barge. This can be frustrating for boating enthusiasts to hear, and in the past, some boat owners have taken it as an insult!

So, although both boats may look similar, there are distinct differences between the two. Some may argue that a narrowboat is a type of barge, as they do have similar characteristics overall.

But the main difference between the two is that a narrowboat is usually 7 feet or less in width and mainly used for leisure purposes, and a barge is usually a lot wider and used for transporting heavy goods across the canal.

Narrowboat

With a narrowboat, you don’t have to worry about getting through the bridges and locks easily whilst you cruise through your canal holiday. The narrowboat is the ideal option for UK canal cruising.

Beam (width) of between 6 feet 10 inches to 7 feet.

Ideal for the UK Waterways.

Barge

A barge is usually used as cargo-carrying vessel. It’s designed to carry and transport passengers and heavy goods through canals and rivers. These barges are usually flat bottomed and long and sometimes have an open-top

As a general rule, anything wider then a narrowboat’s 7 feet can be referred to as a barge.

Canal barges are usually employed to carry cargo.

Dutch barges and other wide beam boats are often used as permanent dwellings.

Which to choose?

So narrowboat or barge? Does it really matter?

You may think this is trivial to get wrong however, not only would you irritate canal buffs, but getting it wrong can also have serious implications from an insurance point of view on the validity and availability of the protection on the boat.

A wide-beam boat is perfect if you are planning to transform the boat into your home. They come with ample built-in storage spaces and individual rooms so you can live comfortably, quite similar to a small apartment.

Although the extra width does put a restriction on your cruising range, there are still many beautiful spots in the UK you can visit.

So, what is a wide-beam boat?

Wide-beam boats have become popular in the UK waterways as more and more people are choosing to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of onboard living. It also gives the option for people to travel as much as they like and explore the countryside scenery along the way.

A wide beam boat is based on the style of a standard narrowboat, i.e they both are constructed with robust steel. However, the difference is that wide beam boats are a lot wider inside and offer a lot more room allowing the installation of contemporary fit-outs.

With all the extra space, wide beam boats offer a comfortable home for those who wish to live onboard and prefer not to cruise as much. Some canals on the network don’t accommodate for the size of a wide beam boat, so it’s always best to do your research if you plan to move.

What are the main differences between a wide beam and a narrowboat?

Both of these boats share similar characteristics and functionalities. Both boats start off the same, but then the wide beam boat is made wider to accommodate for extra space.

Size

A standard narrowboat size: 6 foot 10 inches
A standard wide beam boat size: 10-12 feet wide

Cruising limitations

Narrowboats can pretty much cruise in any canal in the UK, however, wide beam boats are unable to navigate along the smaller canals.

Why should you invest in a wide beam boat?

Offers extra storage and living space

Comfortable and large with an apartment like feel

Option to install contemporary fit-outs

Why a narrowboat may be the better option for you?

If you prefer to constantly cruise and move around. Wide-beam boats are limited due to their width

If you are on a budget. Wide-beam boats come with higher costs for licences, mooring etc.

If you prefer the traditional boat look. Wide-beam boats are more contemporary and modern.
